Video 30 May

This is the band Cody was talking about in this weeks podcast. He was referring to the guitar players tone as his favorite sound. The name of the band is Marillion and the name of the song is “Easter”.

Link 17 May On Trying To Censor Art»

This is an issue that has really bugged the crap out of me in recent years. The “censoring” of art to make it more politically correct. If you don’t like it don’t watch, read, or listen.

That being said I still firmly support the changing of the words “nigger Jim” in Huckleberry Finn to “Robot Jim.” At least until it hurts the feelings of the robots in the inevitable robot uprising of the late 90’s.

Link 11 May Getting The Most Out of 88 Keys (and a brief rant on the state of music today)»

I love it when musicians are not inclined to do the same thing as the people before them. All to often with my generation we celebrate the mediocrity of modern “musicians” while pretending it’s art.

Just because someone has passion for what they’re doing does not mean they’re talented, and just because you put 110% into it doesn’t mean it’s worth listening to or enjoyable. For example, William Hung put everything he had into his “American Idol” audition. Did I buy his record? No. And for obvious reasons.

There are a lot of really good indie and alternative artists out there, and I don’t mean to sound like I’m dogging on them by any means, but for every one of those bands there are hundreds of people who will try their damnedest and because they tried their damnedest receive just as much or more recognition than those people with true God given talent even if they don’t deserve it.

How much longer will we have to suffer the endless drones of Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell wannabes, Nirvana emulations, and recycled Smiths singles?

All of that aside there are sometimes breaths of fresh air hidden amongst bland, over zealous “musicians” that all the hipsters of our generation seem to pour over. People who are innovative and have spent countless hours taking the time to not only thoroughly learn their instruments, but explore new ways to be creative with them.

These videos brings me great joy and restore some of my faith in the possibilities for the future of music beyond my generations very lackadaisical acceptance of the marginal.
